Non-Perscription Acne Medications

Acne Treatment

There are many varieties of non-prescription treatments options available for acne. To treat acne, most people go to their local pharmacy and purchase some sort of over-the-counter medication based on experience, or television advertising, or recommendations by friends. Despite friendly recommendations it is still a good idea to consult with a dermatologist before purchasing any kind of over-the-counter treatment. They may well be able to suggest the best course of treatment for your particular type of acne.

With the large number acne treatment products available today, it can be difficult to know which one to should try. Different people experience different levels of success with any given product. What works for one person may not work for another. To increase your chance of success it’s a good idea to be educated on the type of acne you suffer from and to understand which ingredients work best for that type of acne.

One ingredient commonly found in acne medications is benzoyl peroxide. Normally found in gels and creams, benzoyl peroxide helps by combating the bacteria that contributes to the formation of acne. It is also helps to remove dead skin cells that accumulate on the surface of the skin. These dead skin cells when combined with sebum create blackheads and whiteheads.

Benzoyl peroxide has long been proven to be safe and effective in combating existing acne lesions. It is also effective in preventing new acne breakouts by keeping the skin free of acne causing bacteria. The only reported side effect is dry skin which can be avoided by decreasing the frequency of use until you find what works best for your skin.

Another ingredient frequently found in acne medications is salicylic acid. This helps combat acne by clearing up dead skin cells that are accumulating too quickly and clogging the pores. Its usually considered to be a good idea to keep using a medication containing salicylic acid after the skin has cleared up to prevent future outbreaks of acne. Dry irritated skin is the only side effect associated with salicylic acid.

Resorcinol is another ingredient you may see in some acne medications. Resorcinol helps to exfoliate the skin, again removing dead skin cells that can clog pores.

Of all the ingredients that were listed as effective in fighting acne or preventing breakouts, benzoyl peroxide is probably the most versatile. It can be put in cleansing liquids or bars, as well as lotions, creams, and gels which are intended to be applied directly to the skin. Many of these cleansing products are meant to be used once or twice a daily. The creams and lotions can be used as needed. They should be applied directly to the skin around the acne as well as the on pimples themselves to be most effective. Read and understand warnings and directions for the most effective use of any medication you purchase.
